[PROJECT] Bitcoin Mining Profitability Calculator

DESCRIPTION
This project will help you to calculate the earnings of your mining hardware, providing you the total earnings (approximate) based on: power consumption (*), electricity cost (**), per-device income and the time it will be mining.
This project includes an Initial Setup task that needs to be executed when it is imported from TaskerNet, or when the dev considers it is needed even not imported from TaskerNet.

Building an Ethereum Mining Rig - Part 2

First update to the guide "Building a 6Gpu Mining Rig for Ethereum" - Let's talk about Claymore.
This update supplements and does not replace the Guide to Build a 6GPU Mining Rig for Ethereum published on our site.

The substantial differences are due to the installation of the latest version of the Windows 10 Operating System, the mining on the Ethermine pool (in our opinion simpler than Dwarfpool) and the use of the XFX RX 580 8gb GPUs.

The first variant is found in Part 4 of the guide: the environment variables are not to be entered as they will be integrated directly into the bat file to start mining.

The second variant is found in Part 7 of the guide and leads us to "mine" on a different pool using the Claymore software.

Once downloaded, unzip everything on a folder on your desktop and open the start.bat file with notepad. Clear the contents and copy the following command:

Where instead of "your wallet address" you will have to put your Ethererum wallet - obviously without the quotes - and instead of worker you will put an identification number in case you build more RIGs (such as RIG1, RIG2, etc ...). We opted for the eu1 pool even if some on the discussion forums believe that the us1 is more profitable.

The Ethermine pool offers a very well crafted and descriptive interface. In the Payouts section, after only 5 minutes of mining, you can decide the minimum amount of Ether to be transferred to your wallet by simply entering the IP address of the RIG.

We have decided to mine directly on the Ethereum address of our Exodus wallet. It is not recommended to mine directly on Coinbase, as reported on the site itself. Sin.

Nothing should be left to chance when you decide to build a mining rig for Ethereum.
The third variant is the most difficult of all. Once you have reached Part 5 of the guide, you can decide whether to continue or follow this update / variant. If you are here it is probably because you have run into some problem that the guide does not allow you to solve.

With the latest version of Windows 10, you may run into a kernel conflict between the operating system and AMD's Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition Beta for Blockchain Compute drivers. This conflict will prevent you from using Atiflash after installing the drivers.

Important: Before making any changes to the BIOS, please backup each GPU.

Important: first of all flash the GPUs with the original bios if for any reason you are forced to reinstall the operating system.


Still on Atiflash.
The advice would therefore be to flash the GPUs and then install the AMD drivers. Let's say it would be because you may run into another problem this time related to the GPUs themselves. Since each video card is different from any other, the bios mod of the GPU could crash the operating system showing the classic blue screen and displaying an error related to the Atimkdag.sys file.

This could be due to the fact that some GPUs have significantly higher performance in the calculation phase than others. We could call it a factory overclock but not using them for gaming we cannot say it with absolute certainty.

Having assessed these two drawbacks, the only safe solution is to flash all the GPUs, disconnect them except for the first one, install the Blockchain drivers (plus Atimkdag patch) and launch the mining command verifying that the operating system does not go into crash in the next 5 minutes.

Turn off the rig again and connect the second GPU so on up to the sixth. In the event that one or more video cards should crash the system, disconnect them. After that, it uses DDU from the provisional mode and flashes these GPUs with their original bios. At this point, connect them again, reinstall the Blockcain drivers (plus Atimkdag patch) and start mining definitively.

All the operations related to the use of Atiflash, DDU and driver installation are reported in Part 5 and Part 6 of our guide.
A little bit of Overclocking.
You will certainly find significant differences in performance between the GPUs.

GPUs with modified bios will not leave much room for modification. You will have to proceed with the most extreme overclocking on those that mount the original bios; obviously always in small steps by saving the profile for each GPU. Our guide explains in detail how to do it.

Mining Setup

To mine Bitcoin Rhodium you need to set up an XRC wallet and configure your miner of choice. You can choose between Web wallet, Electrum-XRC or Magnum wallet. To set up a web wallet please visit wallet.bitcoinrh.org. Or download and install Electrum-XRC wallet (recommended) for Windows, Linux and MacOS.

Sign up for XRC web wallet if not yet done so

  1. Create an account, with your username, password and secure question.
  2. Sign in and click “Create Wallet”.
  3. Set up a strong transaction password. Make sure you store it securely in a secure password manager of choice.
  4. Copy the seed somewhere safe. It’d be a good idea to write seed on a hardcopy and keep it safe.
  5. Paste it to confirm you got it right.
  6. Grab an address for the mining step. Your wallet is now ready to mine XRC.

GPU Mining Crash Course - START HERE!

Welcome All to the GPUMining Crash Course!
With the increase in prices in cryptocurrency, a lot of people are getting back into mining and a lot of people are brand new to the concept overall. So, I quickly wrote this crash course to help you understand what to expect and how to successfully mine your first cryptocurrency. This crash course isn't gonna have all of the fluff you'd see in a normal publication. This is just everything you need to know to get up and running on your first cryptocurrency mining rig.

What is cryptocurrency mining?

One of the main things about cryptocurrencies is that they are "decentralized". Sounds great, but WTF does that even mean? Well, the easiest way to explain it is...
You know how if you want to send your friend/family money digitally, you can do so through your bank. Your bank likely takes a transaction fee and in a few days they will transfer the money. Since cryptocurrencies are decentralized, they don't have a bank or organization to fulfill the transfer of money. Instead, they outsource the computing power of their cryptocurrency network to miners (soon to be you). These miners are verifying transactions, securing the blockchain, and powering the cryptocurrency's specific network among other things. As an incentive, the miners collect transaction fees on the transactions that they verify and collect block rewards while new currency is still being introduced into the ecosystem.

What kind of rig should I build?

You can mine cryptocurrencies using your CPU, GPU, FPGA, or ASIC, but this is a GPU Mining subreddit, so I will cater this to GPUs.
For building a great all-around GPU rig, there are two models of GPUs that I'd recommend:
Both of these GPUs have solid hashrates across most mining algorithms and for a decent price! You should be able to find both of these kinds of GPUs used for around $200-$250 each, which is a great price if you know what happened during the last mining craze! ($200 GPUs were out of stock everywhere and people were reselling them for $600+ each)
There are also plenty of great AMD GPUs for mining, but I've worked mostly with Nvidia so that's why both of my recommendations are Nvidia and not AMD.
Other parts to your rig that you'll need are listed below. Most of these can be pieces of crap and are just needed to make the rig actually run, but the one spot you DON'T want to cheap out on is the power supply unit. A decent power supply unit will keep your home from burning down while also keeping your rigs up and running smoothly. Here are my recommendations:

She's built, now what?

Now you need to do a few things. I am a Windows miner, so I will be speaking to Windows here:
  1. Update Windows - Do all of the updates. Just do it.
  2. Update Drivers - Go to the EVGA website and download GeForce experience. It will keep your GPU drivers up to date.
  3. Go to Windows Device Manager and make sure all of your GPUs show up under "Display Adapters". If it is there, but it isn't showing the Name/Model of the GPU as the name, right click it and select "Update Driver". This should fix it.
Assuming you've done all of this, you're ready to download a mining application.

Mining Software

There are tons to choose from! Claymore, Phoenix, EWBF, LolMiner, etc... It can be overwhelming pretty quickly since they all have different algorithm support, speeds, efficiencies, and a whole lot more. On top of that, in order to get them running you need to set up batch files to call the proper exe, point you to the correct pool, and a whole bunch of other stuff that can be confusing to a new user. Not to mention, you will probably need a separate miner, config file, batch file, etc. for each different algorithm that you're interested in mining on.
Instead, I recommend that you download a miner management software that will take care of most of this tedious work for you. There are a few in the sidebar, but the /GPUMining favorite is AIOMiner. It was developed by our very own community member, xixspiderxix with the intention of making mining as easy as possible to do and without any fees. It supports over 100 different algorithms, so you'll be able to mine nearly ANY cryptocurrency you'd like. Just download it from their website and it will take you through a quick tutorial to help you get set up! You can also connect your rig to their website for remote monitoring and control. You've probably seen a few of their posts around this subreddit.
Other Windows mining softwares include:
Note: Many mining softwares have fees built into them. Most are around 1%, but can go as high as 5% or greater! You want a mining software with little or no fees at all so that you get to keep as much cryptocurrency as possible. These fees aren't something you actively pay, the software will automatically take it by mining on the developers behalf for a given amount of time and then switching back to mining on your own behalf. So, please be diligent in the software that you evaluate and make sure it is reputable.

I keep hearing about NiceHash. What is that?

The asshole of the mining industry. Jk, but not really.
NiceHash is a software program that allows you to sell your rig's hashing power to someone on their marketplace. They market themselves as profitable mining, but you're not really mining. You're selling your power in exchange for Bitcoin.
They did a great job telling people that with them, you're always mining the most profitable coin, but that's just not true. Since it is a mining marketplace, they make you mine whatever their most expensive contract is. If their contracts are below market prices, then you're not operating as efficiently and profitably as you could be.
NiceHash also has a sketchy history, which continues to this day. In 2017, they were hacked and lost $65M worth of Bitcoin. No one got paid out for MONTHS and many of their executives conveniently resigned. Their platform is also used to destroy cryptocurrencies. Since people are able to purchase mining power on their platform, people have used their platform to purchase enough mining power to control individual cryptocurrencies and duplicate coins, which increased the malicious user's wealth while completely destroying the integrity of the coin's blockchain. HoriZEN (formerly ZenCash), Ethereum Classic, and many other great cryptocurrencies have been the victim of NiceHash's platform.
For this and many other reasons, we highly recommend that you stay AWAY from Nicehash. We understand that it is extremely easy to use and you get paid in bitcoin, but they are destroying the industry with their greed and lack of motivation to change their platform for the protection of cryptocurrencies.

This is pretty much everything you need to know to get started. We covered the hardware, setting up the software, which software to use, and AIOMiner's tutorial will get you up to speed on how to actually mine the cryptocurrency that you want better than I can explain it, so I'll leave that part to them.

Electroneum Mining on Windows and Mac
Use xmr-stak-cpu software for Electroneum mining on CPU: Claymore provides a higher hash than CPU. The CPU version of this software is available from GitHub.
Download and then open the “config” file via any text editor. You should find the following lines in the text editor:

Each line connects the processor core separately. For example, if you have a 6-core processor, you can connect five cores and leave one for work. It is important that the first line starts from zero. Register and run the software.

Preface

In the past month, we, the team at The HempCoin have been making some huge changes, both internally and business development wise. We have added 3 new roles to the team: Community Outreach Manager, Business Development Manager, and Brand Ambassadors. Thanks to this, we have had many new developments which have shifted our timeframe a little as you may have seen. That being said, we are committed to ensuring our community is kept as up-to-date as possible and provided with as many support materials as we can create. We've spent the better half of two weeks writing up this guide and the tools included in it, in hopes that it will help answer many of the common questions we have been seeing and even some of the less common ones.
 

Tools

Masternode Calculator:
Ever since we have announced that we will be forking into a masternode coin, we have been asked for the details and specifics of the reward payout for a node. Seeing this, we have created a Spreadsheet that is editable by the community. It will calculate the rewards for any number of nodes, and also tell you the expected payout in USD based on a price the user can input. You can find the link to the sheet here.
 
Fork Preparedness Guide:
This guide will ensure you will be completely prepared for the upcoming fork. We have been seeing many questions about the fork which is understandable, and hopefully, this will alleviate many of those by ensuring all of our investors know how to make sure they are prepared, no matter their platform.
Windows: Currently there are two options for coin storage on windows. Bittrex, the exchange that THC is currently traded on, or our official wallet. the safest and most secure option would be to store your coins in the private wallet, however, Bittrex has also confirmed with us that they will be supporting our fork. If you are planning on storing your coins there, all you need to do is purchase the THC and leave it be, once we fork, you will get the new coin from bittrex automatically and that is all. If you intend on using our private wallet, you can download the most up-to-date version from our GitHub here. Once you install it, you will need to let it run to synchronize, this has been known to take a very long time (due to having to sync all blocks since 2014). Once we fork, we will ensure this is alleviated, however, for now, you can follow the tutorial that was written here which will help you go from needing about 2 weeks to sync to about 3 hours at max. Either of these coin storage options will ensure you are completely supported during our fork.
Mac: At the moment, our current wallet only supports the Windows platform. Once we complete our fork there will be a wallet available for all platforms including mac an Linux. So, if you do not have access to a Windows PC your best option for securely storing your coins during our fork is to store them on Bittrex. They have confirmed with the team that they will be supporting the fork so your coins will be safe with them.
Linux: As you may have read above, our wallet currently only officially supports the Windows platform at the moment, however, there have been users who have reported that they have been successful in installing the wallet on Linux. However, at the time, we do not officially support the platform. Our advice would be the same as provided to the Mac users, storing your coins on bittrex would be the best option until our Linux wallet is available.
Android: Currently, the only wallet we know of that will support THC on android is Coinomi. The community has been asking on their support forum if they will be supporting the fork and the reply that was received was somewhat unsure. They stated that no coins will be lost, but never confirmed if they would be adapting to the new algo and giving out any new coins. As the team, we have not heard whether or not they will be supporting the fork so the best plan for android users would be to either transfer your coins to a windows wallet, or to bittrex to ensure you are supported. We are not saying coinomi will not support the fork, however, it is an unknown, and we would prefer to ensure that there is 100% support.
 
Mining Guide:
Lately, we have seen quite a few inquiries about the possibility of mining THC. Currently, there is only one pool that we are aware of which is hosted on the mining-dutch.nl. The tutorial written below will cover how to get started mining with an NVIDIA GPU using the mining-dutch servers, on a Windows-based PC. AMD GPU's have a very similar process, the main difference will be that you need to swap out the program CCMiner for a program which supports the AMD architecture.
To start mining you'll need a few things:
  • A decent GPU (as many as possible really, these are the brains of the operation).
  • A fairly well-ventilated PC case(if you're just mining with your gaming PC)
  • Instead of a PC case a lot of big-time miners just use shelves and build the multi-GPU rigs on those.
  • A mining program (For this tutorial we will be using CCMiner but there are plenty of great alternatives out there too)
  • A pool to mine from (Think of this as a meeting place for all the GPUs to team up and mine faster)
Now that we know what we need to mine, let's get started on setting it up:
  1. Download the correct version of CCMiner: CCminer for 32bit systems or CCminer for 64bit systems (both of these files are just pulled straight from the github).
  2. You may need to install a program to open 7z files such as WinRar.
  3. Extract these files to somewhere like C:\Program Files, or at least somewhere you won't forget about them.
  4. You should see an api folder, a program called ccminer.exe (sometimes ccminer-x64.exe) and a few other small files. What you want to look for is ccminer.conf, this is your config file. You use this to tell your program what pool to mine from.
  5. Open up ccminer.conf with notepad or notepad++ if you have it installed (or really any other coding software) and now we can get to the file editing.
  6. When you open ccminer.conf you should see something that looks like this. (excuse the pastebin link, reddit doesnt seem to like code in lists.)
  7. Next, go to the mining-dutch link and setup an account. (Direct link to signup page)\
  8. (These next links will likely only work once you register and sign in)
  9. Proceed to the workers page (Normally found under My Account>My Workers)
  10. A worker is essentially telling the pool what machine is working for you. Create a new worker by entering in "Workername" "Password" and check the monitor box. Now just hit create.
  11. Now, go back to the ccminer.conf file that we opened earlier. If you follow this link you should see something that looks very much like your file, however, it also has labels, #1, #2, #3.
  12. On your file, fill in #1 with "stratum+tcp://mining-dutch.nl:3435" (this can be found on the mining dutch website, its just hidden. In the top right, click the cloud with the blue icon (getting started) then scroll down to the Vardiff address for Hempcoin)
  13. #2, enter your "loginname.workername" Login name being your username to login to mining-dutch, then workername being what you just named the worker we created.
  14. #3 can be filled with anything, they don't use passwords.
  15. This should really be all you need. Now save the ccminer.conf and then just run ccminer.exe
If all of this was done correctly you should see a command-prompt window pop up and your machine start to mine. It takes some time to get going so that is not unheard of, and also, if you look at the dashboard you may not see your worker show up for a while. This is normal, it uses averages over time to tell you what performance it is getting so it won't have a proper value for a few minutes.

F.A.Q's

Q: I transferred X amount of THC to my wallet, but it's missing? A: The first step to ensuring you never lose any THC is to confirm the wallet address. Always, always, always double and triple-check that the address you input is the same as your address. If there are ANY typos at all, you will not receive your coins. If you have checked and are sure that the address is correct, check your wallet. If you have just installed it, chances are you are still syncing with the blockchain; you will need to wait until you are caught up to see the THC. It's best practice to sync your wallet before you make any transfers. To check the status of your synchronization, check the debug menu in the wallet, it will show you the exact date you are synced to. Lastly, if you are for sure synced, and you have used the correct address, check the transaction ID on the block explorer. This will show what happened with the transaction and allow you to follow where it went. It could also still just be in progress, sometimes it can take up to an hour if there are service delays with the exchange or even just your internet connection.
Q: Why have there been so many delays with THC? You have been around forever! A: Although THC was one of the first 30 cryptocurrencies mined in 2014, the unfortunate truth is that before April 2017, there was no active full-time team. Since then, the original THC FoundeDeveloper and current CEO Tim has worked hard to add incredible new developers, a business outreach team, an entire marketing team, and the brand ambassadorship program. It has taken us a little time to organize, but we are finally in sync as a team and prepared to unleash this business on the world.
Q: When is the fork? A: As many of you have noticed, our whitepaper says fork will occur by Q2, while we previously announced Feb. 23rd. We did this not to provide our community with doubts, but to allow ourselves an added bit of time for our dev team which, like the rest of our team, has added new members in recent months. Due to this, we are far further along with our HempPay platform than we thought possible; as such we will be hiring 3rd party code auditor to audit our code to ensure we run as smoothly as possible. We would much rather delay a fork than risk any of our investor's privacy or security and fork too early. We also want to reiterate that we have a direct line with Bittrex and they will 100% support our fork. We do appreciate everyone’s patience with this transition into the future of THC; we’re working hard to ensure that we fork as early as possible.
Q: Will Bittrex be supporting the fork? A: We have seen this question come up many times now and the answer is, and will always be, yes. Bittrex is well aware of our plans and they know exactly where we stand regarding the fork date. Bittrex has also asked requested our community stop creating support tickets just to confirm the fork. They have been overwhelmed this week with the same question over and over. The final answer here is yes, Bittrex will be supporting the fork and we are in constant contact with them to ensure everything is going as planned.
Q: Will purchases with a credit card to HempPay count as cash advances? A: We are still in the middle stages of building HempPay and finalizing the format for operation and contractual agreements. We intend to partner with exchanges and use their API to make the purchases, so buying THC through our app will have the same effect as using your card to purchase straight from an exchange. Please note that HempPay is still in development so exact details may be subject to change.
Q: What is the cost for a masternode? Some say 10,000 others say 20,000 THC is required. A: To run a masternode, 20,000 THC will be required. We do acknowledge that during our transition, we had originally stated 20,000 and then our team announced 10,000 THC will be required. We have since readjusted our plan, realizing that the low requirement would sink MN profits and lower incentive. Q: I heard Bittrex may delist THC. What?? A: Short answer: No and not even close. Long answer: This rumour was started over a year ago, it was based on a Bittrex Support post from January 27th, 2017. The only post we appear in is the one mentioned above. You will also see that we only appear due to being listed as a potential for removal, due to a lack of volume as most altcoins saw at that time. You will note the size of the list of altcoins here. We are now in direct communication with Bittrex daily and we unequivocally state that there is no need to worry about us being removed at all.

I am seeing too many new people come and and getting confused. Litecoin wiki isn't the greatest when it comes to summing up things so I will try to do things as best as I can. I will attempt to explain from what I have learned and answer some questions. Hopefully people smarter than me will also chime in. I will keep this post updated as much as I can.
Preface
Litecoin is a type to electronic currency. It is just like Bitcoin but it there are differences. Difference explained here.
If you are starting to mine now chances are that you have missed the Bitcoin mining train. If you really want your time and processing power to not go to waste you should mine LTC because the access to BTC from there is much easier.
Mining. What is it?
Let's get this straight. When making any financial commitment to this be prepared to do it with "throw away" money. Mining is all about the hashrate and is measured in KH/s (KiloHash/sec). Unlike the powerful ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) that are used to mine bitcoins using hashrates in the GH/s and even TH/s, litecoin mining has only been able to achieve at the very best MH/s. I think the highest I've seen is 130 MH/s so far. Which leads us to our next section.
Mining Hardware
While CPU mining is still a thing it is not as powerful as GPU mining. Your laptop might be able to get 1 a month. However, I encourage you to consult this list first. List of hardware comparison You will find the highest of processors can maybe pull 100 KH/s and if we put this into a litecoin mining calculator it doesn't give us much.
Another reason why you don't want to mine with your CPU is pretty simple. You are going to destroy it.
So this leaves us with GPUs. Over the past few months (and years) the HD 7950 has been the favourite because it drains less power and has a pretty good hashrate. But recently the introduction of the R9 290 (not the x) has changed the game a bit. People are getting 850 KH/s - 900 KH/s with that card. It's crazy.
Should I mine?
Honestly given the current difficulty you can make a solid rig for about $1100 with a hashrate of 1700 KH/s which would give you your investment back in about a month and a half. I am sure people out there can create something for much cheaper. Here is a good example of a setup as suggested by dystopiats

Hardware Fundamentals
CPU - Do you need a powerful CPU? No but make sure it is a decent one. AMD CPUs are cheap to buy right now with tons of power. Feel free to use a Sempron or Celeron depending on what Motherboard you go with.
RAM - Try to get at least 4 GB so as to not run into any trouble. Memory is cheap these days. I am saying 4 GB only because of Windoze. If you are plan to run this on Linux you can even get away with less memory.
HDD Any good ol 7200 RPM hard drive will do. Make sure it is appropriate. No point in buying a 1TB hard drive. Since, this is a newbie's guide I assumed most won't know how to run linux, but incase you do you can get a USB flash drive and run linux from it thus removing the need for hard drive all toghether. (thanks dystopiats)
GPU - Consult the list of hardware of hardware I posted above. Make sure you consider the KH/s/W ratio. To me the 290 is the best option but you can skimp down to 7950 if you like.
PSU - THIS IS BLOODY IMPORTANT. Most modern GPUs are power hungry so please make sure you are well within the limits of your power consumption.
MOTHERBOARD - Ok, so a pretty popular board right now is Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 and the ASRock 970 Extreme4. Some people are even going for Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD5 and even the mighty Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 because it has more PCI-E slots. 6 to be exact. However you may not need that much. With risers you can get more shoved into less.
PCI-E RISERS - These are called risers. They come in x16 to x16 and x1 to x16 connections. Here is the general rule of thumb. This is very important. Always get a POWERED riser otherwise you will burn a hole in your MoBo. A powered rise as a molex connector so that additional power from PSU can be supplied.
When it comes to hardware I've provided the most basic knowledge you need. Also, take a look at cryptobader's website. This is very helpful. Please visit the mining section of Litecoin Forums and the litecoinmining subreddit for more indepth info.
Mining Software
Now that you have assembled your hardware now you need to get into a pool. But before you do that you need a mining software. There are many different ones but the one that is most popular is cgminer. Download it and make sure you read the README. It is a very robust piece of software. Mining Pools
Now that your hardware and software is ready. I know nothing about solo mining other than the fact that you have to be very lucky and respectable amount of hashing power to decrypt a block. So it is better to join pools. I have been pool hopping for a bit and really liked give-me-coin previously known to the community as give-me-ltc. They have a nice mobile app and 0% pool fees. This is really a personal preference. Take a look at this list and try some yourself.
How do I connect to a pool?
Most pools will give you a tutorial on how to but the basics are as follows:
  • Signup for a pool
  • Create a worker for your account. Usually one worker per rig (Yes people have multiple rigs) is generally a good idea.
  • Create a .run file. Open up notepad and type cgminer.exe -o (address_to_the_miningpool:port_number) -u (yourusername.workername) -p (your_worker_password_if_you_made_one). Then File>Save As>runcgminer.run (Make sure the drop down is set to "All Files" and .txt document.) and save in the same folder as cgminer. That's it.
  • Double click on runcgminer.run (or whatever you named it) and have fun mining.
Mining Profitability
This game is not easy. If it was, practically everyone would be doing it. This is strictly a numbers game and there are calculations available that can help you determine your risk on your investments. 4 variables you need to consider when you are starting to mine:
Hardware cost: The cost of your physical hardware to run this whole operation.
Power: Measured in $/KwH is also known as the operating cost.
Difficulty rate: To put it in layman's terms the increase in difficulty is inversely proportional to amount of coin you can mine. The harder the difficulty the harder it is to mine coin. Right now difficulty is rising at about 18% per 3 days. This can and will change since all you miners are soon going to jump on the band wagon.
Your sanity: I am not going to tell you to keep calm and chive on because quiet frankly that is stupid. What I will tell you not to get too carried away. You will pull you hair out. Seriously.
Next thing you will need is a simple tool. A mining profitability calculator. I have two favourite ones.

Returning back to mining Monero after over 6 months. Need advice.

I have a rx580 and a ryzen 1600. It's been over 6 months so I have no clue what miner pools are good and what new miner software (was using claymore) are now here. My Aorus rx580 8gb failed to show video when I used the most up to date drives from AMD so I used the ones from the Gigabyte website and it's been fine so far.
Backstory (some insight on how I ended up mining Monero) I started mining coins about 3 years ago, with litecoin. I used minergate and with the help of their calculator I relized I could mine Monero for a way higher profit. It was during these times that I earned the majority of my Monero. I bought a 7870 to further my profits after I sold my 6950. But never sold my 0.25 XMR that I made.
Shortly thereafter my 7870 died and I was left unable to mine or game. I had little money to spare, But since the price of Monero had skyrocketed I used 0.20 to buy another used 7870.
The 7870 lasted for awhile and during that time I finally built a real gaming PC. I put a ryzen 1600 and started mining with that too. After a trip away from home I came back and started doing some cleaning. During that I heard the pc make a audible electronic sounding click. I didnt think much of it till when I went to check on it and found that the graphics card had died.
Since the mining boom was now over I set out to buy a new card. I saw an offer I could not turn down. Somone had tried to build a bitcoin rig and was selling their rx580s from it to desperately try and make money back. I got one for 100$ and proudly installed it.
Current problems: First thing I noticed was that with the most to date drives from AMD I got no video. I went to the gigabyte website and downloaded their drivers and its worked fine since. I need to figure out why this may be and if its common. It's the Aorus rx580 8gb. I also need advice on what miners I should be using with the rx580 and the Ryzen 1600 and also new pools as the one I was using, pool.monerominepool.com, shut down.

I hate my Fucking Mining Rig - Short Story of my mining adventure (Don't really hate it)

Wanted to write a short write up on my journey of Crypto mining for some of the newer people and people who want to get into it. Not trying to discourage anyone from starting, but want to show the progression of a newbie.
So I am a good with computers and learned of Bitcoin when it was about $7 a coin. Laughed at the idea of some computer doing some math and getting some BS currency. Million dollar mistake on my part, but hindsight is always 20/20.
Anyways, Learned about ethereum in May. Bought some at around $180 and bought all the way up to $330. Now to the mining rig. Ran all of the calculations and with a 180 hashrate and 900 watts I was gonna get 6-7 Eth per month. Shit was gonna be profitable in under 3 months. I was gonna be a fucking crypto allstar and be rich as fuck!
Bought all of my parts literally the day before they were nonexistent. Literally bought the last RX480's from Amazon. Here is a list of my parts.
Asrock board Pentium dual core processor 4 Gb of ram 128 gb SSD 1200 watt Rosewill PSU 6 Sata to Molex PCI Risers (Junk) 6 RX480's - 2 Asus Strix, 4 Gigabyte Total cost - Roughly $2,500 (Pennies compared to my future ROI)
Please keep in mind that I am not posting every single miner issue that I ran into such as fucking with Wattman for a few weeks before learning about Trixx and Afterburner.
I've built computers before, so that part wasn't hard. Set everything up and get windows 10 running.
Problem 1 - Computer doesn't see all of the cards. Had to run the drivers a few times and tweak some shit, but got all 6 cards seen.
Miner hurdle (See what I did there) but off to the races. Let's get this bitch running so I can begin planning my retirement.
Get Claymore running, Got Trixx to overclock. Ran my cards at -96, 1200, 2200 fans at 85% (Cause I'm cool like that.) Major stability issues from the start. 1 card (Asus) would crash all the time. Didn't know about the watch dog feature in claymore that would restart my rig when a card crashed. Great feature but my computer would go into this state of having power, but not loading the operating system. Even if it did restart, most of the time claymore would get stuck right before setting the dag's and would just lock up. (Claymore program is awesome by the way, this was my rigs fault)
Could not get this fucking Asus card to stop crashing, even on stock settings. Sent the bitch back RMA style. Asus said something was wrong and sent me a new one.
Awesome, lets get this bitch running. I need to start looking at sick houses in Costa Rica to move to once I am rich as Fuck!
New card makes things better for a few days. Not 100% stable but better. Go to vegas for a driving thing (Race cars - Future rich guy stuff) and this mechanical demon starts crashing every few hours. Luckily I had Google remote desktop installed so I could log on and restart it or change settings in Trixx. Had to have my GF unplug it and plug it in a few times.
Get back home, fuck with this thing but still random crashes on random cards. Decide it is the PCI risers. Contact seller who will send me some more for free. Slow boat from china took two weeks to get them. They arrive but still some of them are bad. Can't seem to piece together 6 good ones.
Did some research online (Ethereum Forum and Reddit) and decided to get some new style of risers V007 6 Pin to Sata ($70) and they take a month to get here. Plug them all in and they seem to be working much better. Decent stability, But I ain't got time for fucking stock bios. Let's ramp these bitches up and get 32 MHs per card at 600 watts from the wall!
Actually flashing the bios was pretty easy. Thank you 6 pound 9 ounce baby jesus! Long story short had some major stability issues and bounced around with some different timing straps before finding the right ones. (Uber 3.1 for Samsung memory)
So now that we've got some good hash speeds and decent stability let's ramp this private ATM up a little bit by dual mining some Decred. Get dual mining up and running. go to sleep. Wake up the next morning expecting to see myself on the top 100 forbes list. look at my mining rig stats on my phone and see that it died roughly and hour after I went to sleep. Walked toward my rig on the red carpet I had just installed and saw that it was off. Flicked on the light to check it out. No light, WTF? Well I'll be god damned, no power in this whole fucking room. Checked my breakers and sure enough this metal motherfucker tripped my breaker.
No worries though. I'm smart as fuck. I'll just undervolt the shit out of it to get the power down. No way in hell I am just mining ether. I'm going balls to the wall!
As you can expect I had many days of stability issues and tripped breakers. But fuck it, I have homeowners insurance. Burning it to the ground will be covered. (Didn't happen)
My surge protector must be maxed out. Let's buy a bigger one ($25). Same issues.
Fuck Decred, I'll mine SIA, less power. Damn I'm smart.
Rig is more stable with Sia and no tripped breakers. Family medical emergency, have to fly north for a few days. But my rig has been fairly stable and I've got remote desktop if anything goes wrong.
Arrive at airport, check mining stats, rig is down. No worries remote desktop. FUCK, not responsive, no way to remote into the rig and no way to remotely power it off and on.
Lost 4 days of mining. But no worries the difficulty is only, Holy shit that's high! But the price of Ether will make up for it. Ether crashed to the $200's. Oh well, maybe a 10 room house in Costa instead of a 12. No sweat.
Get back to my house and this whore of a machine is just sitting there in a computer coma. It's on but it's not. LED lights glaring at me like "Fuck you human, I ain't doing your stupid math problems!" Fuck you machine, I'm your master. You will do my math problems and you will fucking like it.
My AMD Drivers seem to disappear and the computer goes into a coma like state. Someone on Reddit suggested using the 16.9.2 drivers. Installed and they worked better.
Still random crashing. This shitty PSU must be maxed out. Fuck you PSU, I'm getting you a little brother (EVGA 750 gold $120.)
What do you mean you have to jerry rig a second PSU so it starts without being connected to a motherboard? 2 more hours of my life wasted.
But finally some stability. On my way to being fucking rich. I start looking at people in bentley's and can only laugh. You dumb fuck, I'm gonna be way richer then you. Gonna get a Bugatti for each day of the week.
Damn this difficulty is a bitch. Fuck you Genesis Mining and your pallets of GPU's. You're killing me smalls!
But anyway, on my way to rolling around in my fuck you money!
Fuck you dag file 135, you're killing my future millions. Fuck you dag 138, you dropped me to 167 mhs.
Thank god AMD was there to save my ass with their dope ass blockchain drivers.
download, run DDU, Restart, install drivers, restart, run pixel patch, restart. Perfect, I'm in the money now! I can taste the caviar and champagne already.
Now my cards only run 4 Mhs each. WTF? Try a bunch of the other new drivers. Same shit. Roll back to 16.9.2 and they run fine, just at 167 instead of 180.
Someone on a forum said he had the same issue and did a fresh install of windows 10 and it worked.
So I'll just reformat my SSD (Windows wouldn't do a fresh install within the operating system. Fuck you Bill Gates! Gonna buy you once I get this thing running at 180.)
Format SSD, plug back in, throw in my gangster ass boot USB drive. Ramdisk error. Fuck you Bill Gates! Reformat SSD multiple times, lots of forum reading. Install windows from another computer through command prompt (I'm a coder now as well.) This shit has got to work, I did it in command prompt bitches!
Same fucking error. Now down to an 8 bedroom house in Costa and only 6 Bugattis.
Let's try unplugging my 6 cards and see if that works. Thank you 6 pound 9 ounce baby jesus. Windows installed.
New drivers work and I'm back at 180! Raking in the cash now.
With those speeds my Asus cards crashed. Had to dial down the hashrate to 177.5 for them to be stable. So now going to use some commands in claymore to run the Asus cards at lower speeds while letting my other cards mine harder.
I wrote this to let people know that mining isn't all Bugatti's and caviar. These machines are fickle little cunts that do what they want. No system is the same. So when you post on a forum, people will give you advice on what may work. But what works for them, may not work on your rig. In the end it's up to you to figure it out.
I have spent countless hours after work and on weekends working on this bitch. Hell I've probably spent a few hours just staring at it and thinking about all of the ways I could destroy it slowly.
While I love Etheruem and do value the knowledge gained, I would have made more money just buying Eth and holding.
The guys you see on youtube building sick rigs with crazy specs have been at it for a while. They have worked through the process and know how to solve all of the problems. You have not and will have to work them out on your own.
My whore of a rig will pay for itself soon. But I would suggest that if you want to start building a new mining rig. Check the difficulty chart and make sure you have tons of free time to fuck with it.

Edit - Had an Asus card die on me and replaced it with a 1070ti. Nvidia is so much easier!
My rosewill 1200 watt PSU melted the 8 pin port and cable. Had to drop $300 on Amazons last 1300 EVGA.
But my rig has well surpassed it's cost and is still mining away like a champ. Eth for life!

What was your biggest "missed the boat" regret with BTC?

I'm sure no one here can top the legendary 10,000 BTC for 2 Pizzas story (at least I hope not!) but now that BTC has smashed $7K I'm hoping someone can make me feel better about my blunder.
It was 2011, I was in college and scrapped up enough $ to build what I thought was a badass gaming rig (it was mostly older parts a generation behind). Intel Core 2 Duo Wolfdale chip, dual NVIDIA 9800 GT's, 4 GB DDR DDR2(!) RAM. I was a gaming god (in my eyes). I started reading about that new thing called "mining" bitcoin and did some calculations that with my rig running I would just barely break even based on electricity costs and the current BTC price (this was way, way before whattomine.com etc, had to do this stuff by hand). I downloaded the original miner app and wallet...and then thought about HEAT! I was in Georgia (USA). It gets hot as hell in the summer, and I realized I was going to have to live in the cloud of excess energy pumped out by my GPU's. So I never pressed the button...all because I didn't think about future me (and future BTC price). Ended up joining the military to pay the bills, no ragrets (for the most part).
Fast forward to a few months ago, I busted out my old pride and joy, fired up the 10K Velociraptor HDD (hey, SSD's weren't quite a thing 8 years ago) dug into my wallet.dat with my fingers crossed that maybe one drunken night I hit the go button and forgot about it. Nothing, a big fat 0.00000000 BTC staring back at me.
So go ahead and please top that! I know it won't be hard, but I need something to make me feel like not a complete and total buffoon!

Two possible solutions to decentralizing mining? Let's discuss

Scope of this post: I am a true believer of Bitcoin. I don't care too much about the price - but I do care, a lot, about the potential it has to change the world for the better. I've got a Bachelor's Degree in Software Development, and a Master's Degree in Cyber Security. I only got into Bitcoin a few months ago, but I'll try utilize my knowledge in this field by trying to contribute as much as I can to the community.
The problem I'll describe and my proposed solutions are simply something I'd like to discuss. I am still new to the cryptoworld, and there is a lot I still don't understand or even know about. I have not yet read the Bitcoin whitepaper in full, but I plan on doing so, in addition to the "Mastering Bitcoin" book authored by Andreas M. Antonopoulos. I know that the problem I mention is far from the only problem we yet need to address with Bitcoin - but I'd really like to zoom-in onto this problem, and this alone. I have no problem with discussing related problems though, and won't see it as an attempt of hijacking this thread.
If your intentions are good and the posts you make are beneficial to the community (and within this subreddit's rules), I'd be happy with anything you post. If anything I've said is false or inaccurate, or you find my ideas to be bad ones, please refrain from just bashing or flaming, and explain why you believe that is the case. I don't think that my ideas here will lead to any changes to Bitcoin Core (I wish I could make that much of a difference!) - but at least let's allow this to be a learning opportunity to learn more about this technology that is still in its infancy. Let's have a serious and mature conversation on this subject, please.
The Problem: To my knowledge, a miner must first download the entire blockchain (140,000 MB (approximately 137 GB) at the time of this writing) and then run the hashing algorithm on each block to verify its integrity. Once this has been done, the miner is then able to receive new transactions on the Network and try to mine the next block. This process requires a minimum of 137 GB of disk space, which will only continue to grow larger as more transactions happen on the blockchain. Large block sizes and the large number of blocks means large quantities of data. Large quantities of data means requiring large disk storage space. Large disk storage space makes it expensive and more difficult for regular users to use regular hardware to mine. This causes the problem where miners are centralized - something we're experiencing at present times.
Proposed Solution #1: Rather than downloading the entire blockchain and holding on to it, the idea is to download data and use it for verification instantly, and then dump that data and re-iterate. Once you have verified the hash up to a certain block, the data itself is not required for mining purposes (it would of course be required for other purposes, such as needing to search for some transaction that took place). If this is indeed doable, then you could utilize as many, or little, disk space as you wish. For instance, if you only have 10 GB of disk space which you'd like to utilize for mining, one could download the first 10 GBs of the blockchain data, generate the hash up until that point, dump the 10 GB of data (while retaining the hash, of course), and re-iterate: put the hashing on hold for a minute, download the next 10 GB of blockchain data, calculate the hash until then (equivalent to running the hash up until the first 20 GBs of data), and again, re-iterate indefinitely, until you've reached the currently last block in the blockchain. All you need, and will ever need, is any fixed amount of data (in this example, 10 GBs). The blockchain can grow as big as it wants without miners requiring to have large amounts of disk space sitting on their hardware. This of course does not solve the problem that a lot of bandwidth is required to download the entire blockchain.
In all honesty, I do not know where the entire blockchain data is being stored. I admit that I have to do more research on this and learn more about it - but, if someone could give a brief explanation / confirmation of this, it would very much be appreciated. Of course, it cannot be stored somewhere central in order to retain its integrity. My assumption is that the miners on the network distribute this data to other miners, apart from verifying new transactions. If this is the case, then you could potentially split the job that miners do into two - A) sharing of blockchain data, and B) verification of transactions. Of course, any miner can do just either one of those tasks, or both. A miner with a lot of bandwidth and storage space can contribute solely to "A", a miner with a lot of computational power but not much bandwidth and/or disk space can contribute solely to "B", while a huge corporatation with a lot of everything (bandwidth, disk space and computational power) can contribute to both "A" and "B" (as is the only current option to mining to date, I believe). Needless to say, the Bitcoin Protocol would need to modified to be capable of rewarding the miners accordingly.
Seperatation of the tasks that miners do ("A" and "B" described previously) helps decentralization. Right now, miners must perform both tasks "A" and "B", and have no option to contribute to the network but performing just one of those two tasks. It's either all or nothing. Seperation of these tasks, however, would allow new miners to join in, and only contribute to "A" or "B" alone if they're unable to participate in both. It opens new opportunities. For instance, for me, electricity in my home country is too expensive to mine Bitcoin, and I don't have ASIC hardware, rendering mining infeasible. I would love to have a small mining rig to be able to participate to the network, but I'd be better off financially by just buying Bitcoins, than mining them. This is a common problem and is true in many countries around the world too. However, if I am able to simply share Blockchain data (uploading it to other miners) at the cost of bandwidth and little electricity (I could leave the client running in the background just when I'm using my PC - no need to have it turned on 24/7), then I would. I would become a miner participating solely in task "A". Right now I cannot do this, as the technology / protocol does not permit me to do so. Yes, I know that the blockchain data would only be downloaded by new miners, so it may be impractible splitting the mining job into two seperate tasks, and running a "Blockchain data sharing client" may be impractible. The 'reward' in BTC can be based on the bandwidth contributed. In the same way that the mining difficulty adjusts automatically depending on the HashPower on the network, maybe it would be needed to adjust the reward depending on available bandwidth for this task.
Proposed Solution #2: Downloading and verifying the entire blockchain is required for integrity - to ensure that the entire blockchain has not, in any way, been tampered with. If one validates the blockchain up until 'Block X', then one can trust all of the data until that point. If one stopped mining today and deleted the blockchain data, and then decided to continue mining a year later, to my understanding, in theory that person wouldn't need to redownload the entire blockchain and validate it from the very beginning. Instead, if the hash up until Block X was known (and stored that value somewhere secure that I could trust hasn't been modified), then one could simply continue off from there.
What if the Bitcoin Protocol was modified in such a way that at certain block intervals (say, every 100,000 blocks), the miner, in addition to validating the transactions and adding the new 50 BTCs to the ledger, would also post the Hash of the blockchain up until that point. However, at such 'milestones', rather than 6 verifications being required, then maybe say 100 or 200 validations would be required for the confirmation of the blockchain data.
New miners could simply find the last 'milestone' that has been validated by A LOT of miners on the network, and continue mining from there - TRUSTING that the Hash up until that milestone is correct, and therefore that all of the transactional information is trustworthy. If the miner does not want to trust the Hash in that milestone, they are always free to download the entire blockchain data and validate the blocks themselves. This is not a replacement of how things are done, but simply an alternative / option.
A Word Of Caution - Security vs Usability / Efficiency: The more we add to the software that the Bitcoin Protocol operates on, and the more complexity we add, the greater the chances of vulnerabilities and the more attack vectors we introduce. A trade-off between security and usability always needs to be found. If my proposed solutions introduce serious risks, then I would be against my own ideas. I'd rather have a secure protocol that we can trust, than one that operates quickly but insecurely. I don't think this thinking needs any debate, and I hope that we all agree on this last note.

I was introduced to Bitcoins last September. I didn't know anything about that and I started studying more about that.

At the end September I found out that mining as we know it (or as I just knew) was about to end thanks to the ASIC machines. I didn't know what mining was and less idea of what ASIC was. Love KSC but don't use your CPU/GPU much for other games? Do IRL Science/R&D with the leftover processing power!

So, a year ago, I got a strong gaming rig with GTX 680, i7 3770k and 16 Gb RAM. But since I got KSP, I haven't played any other game at all. This means that my computer never uses more than 30% GPU, 25% CPU and 25% RAM. What do I do with the rest? I thought, why not make my Kerbals proud and use it for real science research. After all, the greatest benefit that KSP does for society [besides the fun] is the interest in science that it creates.
So I looked around and found Boinc, a virtual supercomputer grid project which uses volunteered computers to do math for research. If it were a physical supercomputer, it would be #4 in the world in processing power. That's what hundreds of thousands of computers all connected but running just ~10% of their processors each can do.
The Project works like so - The volunteer downloads a client which acts as a manager for your share in the donated processing power. You can get it here. Once installed, you can use it set your preferences [Use CPU/GPU only when idle, schedules and usage limits for your processors, etc] and attach to research projects that are a part of BOINC. Having done this, the research project sends your pc a task for processing. Each task is usually just a few MBs in size. After the calculations are done, the result is sent back to be integrated in the research data. You can pause its processing at any time or stop it altogether. It automatically stops when CPU/GPU intensive programs are running. Each research project can be joined or left any time or its priority/processing share adjusted.
Some of the projects include - Calculating protein folding results to aid in medical research for AIDS, Alzheimers, Cancer research etc; Tracking and resolving asteroids and other small celestial bodies; Calculating systems and research data for future missions to other planets [rover systems, transfer rocket statistics, etc]; process chemical, mechanical and quantum properties to use in nanotech research; analyze global weather data for climate change research; so on.

Ps. *KSC is actually very light in usage. The reason it gets terrible fps or crashes is that the Unity engine it uses does not optimally use current CPU/GPU/RAM capabilities.
Note - This isn't like bitcoin mining.
You can select how much of your processing power is given. You can give 10% of your CPU and 0% of your GPU so it doesn't even affect the temperature or power usage much at all, thereby having a negligible impact on your component life. The important thing is that even just 5% processing from an average computer will make a difference.
